What We Do
BCF Earthworks handles the digging side of utility work — trenching and line installation for water service to homes and outbuildings. We run a mini excavator to cut precise, clean trenches to the depth you need.
- Water line installation — running new water service from a supply point to a structure
- Well water line installation — trenching and installing lines from a well to the home or outbuilding
- Run water to a shed, barn, or outbuilding — extending water service to a structure on your property
- Underground utility trenching — digging trenches for pipe, conduit, or line installation
- Trench backfill and compaction — closing the trench properly so the ground settles right
We dig to spec, lay the line if needed, and backfill and compact the trench when we're done. The yard isn't left torn up — we take care of the ground as part of the job.
Common Jobs We Handle
- Running water to a shed, garage, or workshop. You've got a detached structure and you want a water source out there. We trench from your supply line to the structure and install the line. Straightforward work that makes the building usable year-round.
- Running water to a barn or livestock building. Farms across Daviess County need reliable water in the barn. We trench and install lines for water service to barns, stables, and livestock housing — at the right depth to avoid freeze problems in Western Kentucky winters.
- New home water service. If you're building and need water run from the meter or well to the home, we handle the trench and line installation as part of the site work.
- Well water line replacement or reroute. Old lines fail or routing changes when you add on to a structure. We dig out the old line path and install new.
If your project also involves other utility work — like underground electrical to the same outbuilding — we can coordinate both trenches at once. Often the most efficient approach.
How Deep Does a Utility Trench Need to Be?
Depth depends on what's going in the trench and local frost depth requirements. In Western Kentucky, water lines generally need to be at least 24 to 36 inches deep to stay below the frost line — though the specific requirement depends on the line type, local code, and site conditions.
We dig to the appropriate depth for the type of line and the location. If you're not sure what depth your job requires, tell us what you're running and we'll confirm before we start. Getting depth right the first time is a lot cheaper than digging it up again.
What Affects the Cost
- Length of the run. A 50-foot trench from a utility connection to a shed is a different job than a 400-foot run across a field to a barn.
- Depth required. Deeper trenches take more time and remove more material.
- Soil conditions. Loose loam digs faster than rocky or heavily compacted clay soil common in parts of Daviess County.
- Terrain and obstacles. Crossing a driveway, navigating around trees, or working in a tight space adds time.
- Backfill and surface restoration. We always backfill and compact. If the trench crosses a gravel drive or landscaped area, restoration is part of the quote.

- Where it's starting and where it needs to end up
- Approximate distance
- Property location

Equipment We Use
We run a mini excavator for trenching work. It cuts clean, precise trenches with minimal disturbance to the surrounding ground. For longer runs across open fields, we can move efficiently without tearing up more than what's needed.
For jobs that involve both trenching and site grading — like a new construction site where you're running utilities and prepping a pad — we can handle excavation and grading as part of the same project.
